Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

The Apartment With No Heating

My Hobart apartment had absolutely no heating – not even a portable heater. The landlord claimed it wasn’t necessary because ‘Hobart doesn’t get that cold.’ I spent two winters wearing multiple layers indoors, using hot water bottles and electric blankets just to stay warm enough to sleep. When I asked about installing a heat pump at my own expense, I was told any alterations to the property would void my lease. The condensation was so bad that mold started growing on my clothes in the wardrobe. I eventually moved out when my doctor said my persistent cough was likely related to the living conditions.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
