Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

My Experience With we had…

we had an investor buy our property during covid and our property manager changed therefore i was unable to pay rent using direct transfer from my account (as i had done for the past 5 years at this property). instead i had to download an app, link my banking details and transfer minimum 30 days in advance. this stared out as an inconvenience (this app gave me trouble) but then we started to receive aggressive emails and texts about unpaid rent only to find out the app did not transfer the payments. this happened twice (i could see the request for payment in the app, i could see that i approved it, and i was also financially able to pay) but despite this the app still did not debit my account. my property manager only got more aggressive and basically threatened eviction. this was an unnecessarily stressful process.

These aren't just assets, they're our homes.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
