Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

Living Through Landlord increased our…

Landlord increased our rent twice in a 6 month period – once after the interest rate increases started (a $30 p/w increase) and then again 4 months later (a $40 p/w). We were given minimal notice each time (2 weeks) and barely have time to budget for increased costs. They also refused to approve repairs (e.g. fixing a leaking toilet, installing a screen door which was never there, door on the garden shed was only attached by one hinge) whilst increasing rent. The landlord also refused to fix a significant issue with termites in a garden tree that was slowly dying and becoming more hazardous each passing month. When this issue was fixed, we were sent a copy of the receipt by the real estate agent, as we believe the landlord was trying to get us to cover the bill via a rent increase.

These aren't just assets, they're our homes.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
