Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

Trading my health for rent

There are certain expenses related to living healthily that I can’t reduce (vegetables, fruit, access to gym, medical appointments) but I am trying to find alternatives (growing my own vegetables, walking rather than paying for public transport). I’ve changed phone plans, insulation providers, shop at aldi, op shops, meal prep ahead of time. Freezing suitable foods and limiting food waste. Comparing petrol prices. Have to negotiate a payment plan for rates and just had an X-ray and claim for Medicare was less than half the cost of the service.

These aren't just assets, they're our homes.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
