Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

Racist landlord

The Landlord’s son approached us, he is taking over the property management of the property. He introduced himself by saying that there would be a “hefty rent increase” from $400 to $520. In this meeting he also made a slur towards Chinese people, and said that the house has a severe rising damp problem that he has no intention of fixing. He tried to scare us by saying that he will take photos of everything and will replace all the garden plants with “native species” (plants he prefers). Later he called the house and spoke with my daughter, he questioned how many people live in the house and how many cars there are. He doesn’t realise that because of his intimidation techniques, we’re leaving.

These aren't just assets, they're our homes.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
