Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

Cost of living taking its toll

I live on my own & work 4 days /week. My rent increase means my rent has gone up by 25%. On top of the ever increasing food, petrol & electricity costs I am struggling. I’ve taken on some casual work but it varies week to week and I am exhausted working overtime or 6-7 days / week. Anxiety & stress is my constant companion along with increased drinking. I have nothing left to spare. If one more financial expense occurs I won’t be able to meet it. I couldn’t move as rentals were non existent or even higher plus removal costs. I moved to this area as work was available & knew I could rent. Buying simply isn’t possible for me.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
