Home truths: renters' stories from the Australian housing crisis.

What Happened When We moved…

We moved into an “as is” rental which had been empty for some time in a very good location. First 3 months was fine, then we were told the LL wanted to increase the rent for a further 6months, which we agreed to again “as is”. Now we have been advised that we need to move out so they can renovate. Whilst we had agreed to take the house as is, we had also been told that we were going to be able to stay for 2+ years. We’ve spent a lot of our own time and money making improvements. Now with the rental market as it is we not only need to find somewhere to live, but we face having to pay a lot more in rent (around $100+ more pw for something equivalent). The whole thing is a massive additional stress that we don’t need.

These aren't just assets, they're our homes.

In rental properties across Australia, real people are experiencing life's biggest moments — birthdays, breakups, new jobs, lockdowns, first kisses, last goodbyes.

When politicians talk about housing, they can't cut renters out of the conversation. 1 in 3 of us rent: this is what the housing crisis looks like for us.
